10 Great Reasons to Visit Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande is a natural paradise with activities for all ages and interests, there is just so much to see and do! My best advice is to plan for a minimum stay of 3 - 4 nights. Of course, 5 nights would be even better. Our guests who planned for just two nights on the Island regretted that they didn't have more time, so don't be disappointed. Read on, and you'll understand why!

Ah! Breathe deeply, you're now in Paradise. Walk along the beautiful beach of Abraão. Whichever way you look, the views are just breathtaking. While away a few hours at the Cafe do Mar, a relaxing, but lively beach bar. Try a passionfruit caipifruta …mmm delicious! This is a great place to meet fellow travelers from all over the world and find your Island Rhythm.

Follow the jungle trail to the s-p-e-c-t-a-c-u-l-a-r Lopes Mendes surf beach, recognized as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the World! Catch the waves and then stroll along 3 kilometres of pristine silver sand before catching a schooner back to the village of Abraão.

Take a boat trip to the Green and Blue Lagoons, with several other stops along the way. Dive, swim and snorkel with colorful fish, turtles and maybe little sea horses! Soak up the sun on the bow of the boat and enjoy a superb seafood lunch at a tropical beach hideaway.

Hike to Dois Rios (Two Rivers) and visit the ruins of the Candido Mendes Prison, only closed in 1994. Howler monkeys will accompany you along the way. The jungle shortcut will add to your adventure. Connect with nature, a wealth of opportunity for the keen photographer. Enjoy a hearty lunch at the Barzinho (little bar) before the trek home.

Enjoy a romantic dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants in the village of Abraão.

Dom Mario and Lua e Mar are two of my favourites. Dom’s filet mignom, served with a piquant green pepper sauce, is the best steak I have ever had. At Lua e Mar you'll love the Moqueca of fresh fish fillets and prawns or the succulent fillets of salmon served with passion fruit sauce, hmmm just delicious!

Get down, mix in with the locals and learn to dance Forro, Brazil's version of Rock 'n Roll! This is a great night of guaranteed fun with authentic Brazilian music, so just leave your inhibitions at the door and shake your booty!

Are you up for a challenge? If the answer is Yes, then you need to get away early to climb the Pico do Papagaio, Ilha Grande's second highest peak. At 982 mt, it's not an easy climb, but once at the Pico you will be one of the privileged few - on Top of the World. The 360 degree view of the Island is truly breathtaking! This is the only hike for which you definitely must have an experienced guide. Aratinga will arrange for João, who you can see in this photo, to guide you during your greatest adventure on Ilha Grande!

Take the Abraão Circuit, an easy trail to Black Beach (Praia Preta). You'll visit the ruins of Lazareto and the Aqueduct. Refresh in the natural pool along the way. Feeling more adventurous? Then continue to the Witches' Waterfall, just an hour's walk away. Have the best hydro massage of your life, to relieve tired muscles at the end of your walk.

Get that old bod back in shape! Kayak from Abraão beach to Abraãozinha. This is a 1 hour paddle, depending on the winds and your paddling technique, Ha! Ha! The destination is definitely worth it. Have lunch at the Point de Verão and try the excellent calamari (lula dore) or the super fresh Isca de peixe, succulent fillets of white fish, lightly fried and served with fresh lime. You have definitely earned an icy cold cerveja before the paddle home!
